Which Massapequa Train Station Should You Go To?

The town of Massapequa has 2 distinct stops on the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR). Massapequa Train Station and Massapequa Park Train Station are both on the Babylon branch of the LIRR. Our overview of the Massapequa Train Station will inform you of which station is best for you, as well as the best way to get there depending on the reason for your trip. Both stations are popular transportation options for daily commuters to get to work in New York City by taking the hour ride West to Penn Station.

Massapequa Park Train Station

Originally opened in 1933, this station is located along Sunrise Highway. However, the northern side borders Front Street in Massapequa, including Massapequa Perk coffee shop. This station sometimes serves as the starting point for some early westbound trains going to Penn Station and the endpoint for eastbound rush hour trains later in the day.

Massapequa Park Train Station Parking Tips

Parking at this station is typically limited because of the small quantity of spots and large volume of daily commuters making the trip to Penn Station. As a result, parking spots are usually filled after the early morning rush hour trains. 

Here are some helpful tips about parking to help you catch your next train at Massapequa Park Train Station:

  • Arrive at the station early
  • Look to park on the East end of the lot, sometimes people miss open spots. 
  • If there is no parking, in the Massapequa Train Station parking lot, look for parking on Front Street along the tracks. 
  • If possible, arrange a ride to get dropped off at the station.

Pro Tip: Check the schedule  in advance if your train is stopping at the Massapequa Train Station as well. If it is, you have a better chance of finding a parking spot in that lot because it has more parking spaces available. 

Please Note: Certain parking permits may be required to park in some spots in the Massapequa Park Train Station parking lot. In addition, some spots are designated for LIRR employee parking. Make sure you have the appropriate requirements for where you are trying to park to avoid getting a ticket. 

 Massapequa Train Station

Originally known as Oyster Bay Station, this LIRR Train station was originally constructed on October 28,1867. The name was later changed to Massapequa Train Station in   May 1889. Similar to Massapequa Park Train station, It is conveniently located along Sunrise Highway across the street from Massapequa Diner, which is open 24/7. This makes it a great stop after a long night out in New York City.

Massapequa Train Station is on the Babylon branch of the LIRR, which later turns into the Montauk Branch. 

Massapequa Train Station Parking Tips

The Massapequa Train Station parking lot is more accommodating when it comes to the amount of spots available for commuters to park. Unlike Massapequa Park Train Station, there are parking lots located on both sides of the platform. Although there is a large number of spots in the Massapequa Train Station parking lot, that doesn’t stop it from filling up during the week. After the rush hour trains in the morning, spots can be hard to come by. However, the lot is still substantially bigger than Massapequa Park so you have a better chance trying here. 

On the weekends, there are usually plenty of spots available in the Massapequa Train Station Parking lot. This makes the Massapequa Train Station a great place to leave your car when taking the Long Island Railroad into Penn Station for an event or out to Montauk for the day. Massapequa Train Station is also conveniently located across the street from the Massapequa Diner, which is open 24/7 and a great stop after a night out in the city.

Please Note: Similar to Massapequa Park Train Station, parking permits may be required to park in some spots in Massapequa Train Station parking lot. In addition, some spots may be designated for LIRR employee parking. Be sure you have the appropriate requirements for the spot you are trying to park in to avoid returning to a ticket on your car. 

The Best Way to Come Back to Massapequa Train Station and Massapequa Park Train Station

This tip may be obvious to some Massapequa locals, but many people don’t realize it. We wanted to share it with everyone because it has saved us a lot of time standing around in Penn Station waiting for the next train home. 

When planning on how you will get back to Massapequa, consider both train stations as an option when checking the schedule for your ride back. If you have your car parked at either station, a train ride from one train station to the other is about 2 minutes. In this case, it is worth avoiding the wait for a train at the other station. 

If you don’t have a car parked at either station, the taxi, lyft, or uber, to your destination will have a negligible difference in cost.
