What's the difference between Massapequa and Massapequa Park?

Massapequa Park is an incorporated village, which technically differentiates it from Massapequa. As a result, each has a different zip code. However, if you live in Massapequa or Massapequa Park, you know they are pretty much one and the same!

Massapequa History

Original Settlement

Massapequa's history comes from Native American Roots. The first settlers of Massapequa were a Native American Group called the Lenape, who were Algonquin speaking people. These settlers were identified as one of the "13 tribes of Long Island" by a 19th-century writer. The settlement of Massapequa happened around 1658 when it was purchased by Town of Oyster by merchants from the local tribe led by Chief Tackapausha.

1900's

Massapequa was still a small town when the second World War broke out, with a population of 3,000 people. During this time in Massapequa History, the majority of the area was not yet developed and the majority of people worked locally as farmers.

If a resident wasn't a farmer, they likely worked at a large nearby aircraft plant during the war such as Grumman or Republic. An interesting time in Massapequa History was when John Burns Park was converted to a cornfield to feed the soldiers in the 1960s.
