Trump Defends Massapequa “Chiefs” Logo — Here’s What’s Happening
Former President Donald Trump has recently voiced strong support for Massapequa High School in its dispute with New York State over the school’s “Chiefs” mascot, which features Native American imagery. Here’s a concise summary of his statements and the ensuing developments:
Trump’s Position on the Massapequa Chiefs Mascot
- Support for the Mascot: Trump criticized New York State’s mandate requiring schools to remove Native American-themed mascots, labeling it as an insult to Native Americans. He emphasized that such symbols honor Native heritage and should be preserved.
- Federal Intervention: He directed Education Secretary Linda McMahon to intervene in the matter. Subsequently, the U.S. Department of Education initiated an investigation into whether New York’s actions violated civil rights laws by threatening to withhold funding from the Massapequa School District over its mascot.
Background of the Controversy
- State Mandate: In 2023, New York State ordered schools to eliminate Native American mascots to prevent the perpetuation of negative stereotypes. Schools were required to rebrand unless they obtained approval from tribal leaders.
- Local Response: Massapequa’s school board opposed the directive, arguing that the “Chiefs” name honors Native American heritage and reflects the community’s identity. They also cited the financial burden of rebranding, estimating costs around $1 million.
Legal and Community Reactions
- Legal Actions: The school district challenged the state’s mandate in court but lost the case. Despite the setback, local officials and supporters remain determined to retain the mascot.
- Community Support: Organizations like the Native American Guardians Association (NAGA) support preserving Native American sports imagery and have filed complaints arguing that the state’s policy erases cultural recognition.
Former President Donald Trump is stepping into the Massapequa High School mascot controversy — and he’s not holding back. The predisent said the following in his tweet about the situation:

“I agree with the people in Massapequa, Long Island, who are fighting furiously to keep the Massapequa Chiefs logo on their Teams and School. Forcing them to change the name, after all of these years, is ridiculous and, in actuality, an affront to our great Indian population. The School Board, and virtually everyone in the area, are demanding the name be kept. It has become the School’s identity and, what could be wrong with using the name, “Chief”? I don’t see the Kansas City Chiefs changing their name anytime soon! By copy of this TRUTH, I am asking my highly capable Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon, to fight for the people of Massapequa on this very important issue. LONG LIVE THE MASSAPEQUA CHIEFS!”
✅ Trump blasted New York State’s demand that Massapequa drop its “Chiefs” mascot, calling it an insult to Native Americans, not a protection.
✅ He says the “Chiefs” name actually honors Native American heritage and that erasing it is wrong.

Now, Trump’s team is taking it even further:
➡️ The U.S. Department of Education, under Linda McMahon, is opening an investigation.
➡️ They’re looking into whether New York violated civil rights laws by threatening to pull funding from the school district if it didn’t change the mascot.
Quick Backstory:
🔹 New York ordered all schools to remove Native American-themed mascots unless they got special approval from tribal leaders.
🔹 Massapequa pushed back, arguing the “Chiefs” name is about respect and community pride — and rebranding could cost them over $1 million.
🔹 They lost their court challenge, but the community and groups like the Native American Guardians Association are standing firm, saying this fight is about preserving history, not erasing it.
Where do Locals Stand on the Logo Debate?
The logo debate does not only effect Massapequa. Other towns, such as Wantagh are being asked to change their logo. Local Realtor Al Iaquinta stopped by Massapequa to ask locals what they though about the logo.
